The above piece is a mixed media work titled My Body Is My Mind.  The intent is to invite the viewer to adjust their perception of a norm – in this instance a prima ballerina who has chosen to cover her body in tattoos. The tattoos represent life events, personal messages, and pleasing shapes.  The ink tells the story of this woman and allows the viewer a personal insight into her thoughts, fears, hopes, and motivations.  She embodies so much more than just a ballerina.  I wanted to create a strong social statement about prejudices and pre-conceived judgements often made at first glance.  It is meant to make a statement about the complexity and value of womanhood in a world that tries to put women in neat, controllable boxes.  My intent is to inspire each viewer to see something new beyond the ingrained judgements of our culture.

Barbara Clark, artist

A native of Greenville, MI, I recently relocated from California after a 40-year absence from this area.  I have spent 30+ years as a mosaic and ceramic artist.  I am a repurposing artist; incorporating recycled and found objects from jewelry and bottle caps to reclaimed wood and metal in my pieces.  I enjoy doing large-scale projects and pieces.

My projects range from small pictures to entire sides of buildings. I like to include whimsy into my artwork.  My inspirations comes from the birds on my feeder to the injustices I witness in our world.  My talent is my ability to take seemingly unrelated items and assemble them in a new way.  I aim to re-direct the stereotypes and boxes our brains automatically assign.

I hope to inspire each viewer to see something new beyond the ingrained judgements of our culture.
